Addressing Supply Chain Challenges in K-12

Despite a slight improvement in the 2023-24 school year, operators in K-12 foodservice are still having supply chain issues. A recent survey shows that 95% of operators had at least one supply chain-related issue in 2024, and 80% cited high food costs as a major concern. Given these unexpected delays and price hikes, operators need to find quick ways to adapt so they can continue serving delicious, healthy meals to their students.

Opting for Versatility

Rather than relying on certain ingredients for breakfast and others for lunch, operators should choose items they can incorporate into both menus. Doing so will improve inventory management by reducing the need for specialized orders. Operators can also keep costs down by using one ingredient across multiple dishes and between dayparts.

Using Flexible Products

To offset supply chain challenges, operators need products they can prepare in different ways for a variety of recipes. Turkey thigh roast can be sliced, diced or shredded and pairs well with any flavor profile while providing the nutrition students need. The Shredded Turkey Breakfast Burrito Bowl is an easy morning option, which includes eggs and potatoes. Make a delicious filling for tacos, burritos or sandwiches with this Turkey Barbacoa recipe. Students will also love this BBQ-Glazed Thigh Roast Sandwich served on a whole-wheat bun.
