Healthy Eating: More Than a Kick

January 2019

Many people now depend on foodservice for healthy options they can fit into their busy schedules. As consumers become increasingly health conscious, about two-thirds check calorie counts on menus at least some of the time. Inspired by this growing interest in nutrition, restaurant operators are looking for ways to add healthy and flavorful appetizers, entrées and more.

Turkey is a high-protein ingredient that’s lower in fat and calories than other meats. It’s also a way for operators to meet diner demand for more nutritious fare. Take a look at some of the latest health trends below and find delicious dishes to match:

  • According to Technomic, protein is the top nutrient consumers look for in food. Try a Grilled Sesame Turkey Kebab for a protein-packed dish skewered with cherry tomatoes, red peppers, artichoke hearts and zucchini.
  • When asked, 45% of consumers responded that they’d be very likely to purchase healthier items if they were available at a restaurant. A recipe such as a Turkey Avocado Open-Faced Sandwich offers diners that healthy choice with its oven-roasted turkey breast and garnish of radish and cilantro.
  • Every person has a different definition of healthy. For some, descriptors such as natural, organic or gluten free carry more importance than others. Restaurants can consider labeling their menus with key callouts, especially if serving these Gluten Free Italian Turkey Meatballs or this Mediterranean Turkey Burger featuring our All Natural Mediterranean White Turkey Burger.
  • Consumers responded that they’re likely to purchase offerings that substitute vegetables for ingredients that are high in carbs. Singapore Meatballs and Zoodles are made with zucchini instead of traditional pasta noodles, and the meatballs are coated in Thai sweet chili sauce.

Diners want to eat healthy food. It’s a preference that’s easy to accommodate with an ingredient as versatile and high in protein as turkey.
