Sandwiches: An A+ Solution for K-12 Menus
October 2025
K-12 operators are juggling a lot: tight budgets, limited labor and high student expectations. Sandwiches have always been a kid-favorite option and are a menu go-to to meet all these challenges. Discover a few reasons why they’re more helpful than ever, and get inspired with recipes that students will love.
Ease and Efficiency
Two pieces of bread, a protein and maybe a vegetable or two. What could be simpler? Sandwiches often require less specialized labor and cooking time, which comes in handy when costs are high and labor is scarce. In an SNA study of meal program directors nationwide, 94% said they’re facing challenges related to higher food costs. Choosing easy-prep and versatile ingredients to build interesting sandwiches can lower the pressure and give operators more opportunity to be creative.
A Platform for Protein
Updated USDA regulations now allow operators to combine meat and grains to reach the one- ounce requirement for breakfast. Adding proteins like turkey bacon or turkey sausage links and patties to breakfast sandwiches is a great way to give students a morning boost. Plus, fully cooked products like these help streamline menus and cut back on prep.
Satisfy Gen Alpha’s Taste for Adventure
Gen Alpha students are more likely to live in multicultural households, making their palates primed for global flavors. Sandwiches are a familiar format for members of this generation and an easy way for operators to incorporate different flavor influences that appeal to them. To get students excited, food program directors could design “sandwich-of-the-week” boards with recipe information or spotlight student-favorite sandwiches on social media or in the school newsletter. Or create a build-your-own sandwich bar featuring a variety of healthy ingredients.
